Hibiscus flowers are delicate and very beautiful just as young women appear to be, so hibiscuses often symbolize young women. Hibiscuses come in a floral rainbow of colors. Red is a symbol of love and passion.

Hawaii designated yellow hibiscus (Hibiscus brackenridgei), also known as Pua Aloalo or Ma`o-hau-hele, as the official state flower in 1988. Yellow hibiscus flowers are most commonly associated with good luck and good fortune, but can also symbolize sunshine and happiness.

Possibly the oldest, and certainly one of the most popular leis, the maile lei is steeped in history and tradition. Known as “The Royal Lei” because it was prized by ali‘i (Hawaiian royalty) and often given to denote honor, respect, peace, friendship and love. Maile leis were used by people of all classes for many different occasions. Kahunas, Hawaiian priests, used maile leis to bind the bride and groom’s hands together as a symbol of their unity.

Kapa is a fabric made by native Hawaiians from the bast fibres of certain species of trees and shrubs. Kapa is based primarily on the creative combination of linear elements that cross and converge to form squares, triangles, chevrons, and diagonal forms, giving a feeling of boldness and directness. Kapa was used primarily for clothing like the malo worn by men as a loincloth and the pāʻū worn by women as a wraparound
